You know what makes your product different.

You've studied competitors, collected references, and explored ideas. Yet you’re still unsure how to anchor your product’s value into packaging that feels distinct enough for consumers to notice and choose.

It can feel like a risk to invest in a packaging design project when you're unsure which visual cues are at play on the shelf.

And without understanding the visual cues your competitors rely on, it becomes harder to know which design direction can support your brand and which may cause it to blend in.

The Shelf Edit is a first step toward investing in design with more clarity. It helps startups product brands understand the competitor visual landscape before moving into branding and packaging.

The Shelf Edit is an in-depth visual analysis of your competitors’ design language.

I approach design for the long term. Therefore, whether you are planning to launch online or in retail, The Shelf Edit analysis will be built with the retail environment in mind.

The difference is that online, consumers may invest a bit more time to understand the story behind your product and brand. In retail, that time can be reduced to only a few seconds, during which your packaging needs to be noticed, easily located, and ultimately chosen.

The analysis will break down the visual patterns that appear within your category and the cues your competitors rely on to communicate with consumers. You will walk away feeling more confident investing in branding and packaging design.

The Deliverables

You'll receive a focused strategic analysis covering:

Competitor Semiotic Analysis of how your competitors communicate meaning through color, typography, imagery, and tone.

Category Cues Map of the visual attributes customers associate with your product's category and how competitors use these cues.

Shelf Snapshot at how competitors appear on shelf, showing how brands use shelf blocks for recognition and where visual sameness begins to appear.

Positioning Axis showing how competitors distribute across two key visual parameters.

who is it for

The Shelf Edit is for the product founder

Who is not yet ready to commision a full strategy and packaging design project, but is making product and business decisions that will dictate their final packaging options.

It is for you if you are choosing between packaging formats, comparing bottle or container options, organizing your SKU range, preparing front-of-pack copy, deciding what product information needs to be ready, or trying to understand what consumers expect to see in your category.

It helps you see which choices are category standards, which ones are becoming overused, and which ones may create room for your product to feel more distinct when design begins.

The goal is not to design your packaging yet. It is to help you make the early decisions around your product's format, structure, and information with more context before investing in branding and packaging.

BENEFITS & OUTCOMES

With The Shelf Edit, you gain

01  Time saved on category research

Instead of spending hours visiting stores, comparing competitors, reading about packaging cues, or trying to make sense of the competitors' visual language, The Shelf Edit does that work for you. It gives you a focused view of the competitor landscape, so you can stay focused on developing your product and building the business around it.

02  More informed pre-design decisions

Prior to design, there are many decisions you need to make ahead, from the product container type, to the product range, the information that needs to appear on pack, and the messaging. The Shelf Edit helps you look at those choices with more context, making sure your decisions are anchored in a clearer understanding of your product category.

03  Stronger conviction before investing in design

By seeing where competitors visually cluster, which cues feel overused, and where opportunity may exist, you gain one important layer of context before moving into branding and packaging. The Shelf Edit does not define your full brand strategy, but it's a first step that helps you understand the competitive landscape that future design decisions will need to respond to.

My path into design wasn’t linear. I moved through literature, culinary arts, aviation, and different cultures. Born in Qatar and raised in Jordan, I spent several years working in the UAE and now live between Barcelona and Amman.

Two years ago, I left my job, moved countries, and started my own design practice. I wanted to build a life where curiosity, creativity, and freedom could guide what I do.

Through NOAD Design, I work with founders building thoughtful product brands in food, wellness, and lifestyle, shaping identities grounded in story, relevant to their moment, and ready to live in the real world.
